need help booting puppy on an old IBM

Hi,
I'm new to Linux. I have an old IBM 333 PC that I have been running DSL on. I am trying to boot Puppy from CD to test it out. The CD works on other systems but on this one I'm getting:
Searching for Puppy files in Computer disk drives...
ide-cd: cmd 0x28 timed out
hdc: lost interupt
... this message repeats forever ...

I have reformated the hd to fat32 but no difference. Like I said the DSL CD boots fine, can see the hd and save its backup files there.
Any ideas?

You may want to try passing "ide=nodma" to the kernel.
