Downloading Programs

I still do not understand how to download and install programs; I am sure that it has been asked many times so if you do not want to recreate the wheel you can tell me a good reference please do so (or if it is simple just reply).

Also, I am booting off of an USB drive; when I go to my Google task bar is there a way to delete the past history? Also, since everything is run in RAM, if you open a lot of links or windows without closing the others can you make the system run slowly?

Thanks,

We need to know your Linux distribution to give you 'good' advice.

There are a few ways that packages are delivered/installed:

-rpm (.rpm) ex. SUSE, RED HAT
-tar ball (.tar, .tgz) ex. All Linux distros
-deb (.deb) Debian based

Depending on what your distribution is will tell you which one(s) to use.

I just downloaded Puppy 5.2 and started to download several applications, but can't install them. Error message suggest to instal unrpm.pup. I downloaded unrpm and it is in My-applications folder, but the error message is still the same, suggesting to install unrpm in order to open and install the new programs. I guess if there is an activation requirement for unrpm. Please advice. Thank you.

Guess you tried to install an RPM package. That, however, is one package type that does not go well with Puppy 5.2

Puppy downloads and installs programs in several ways:

1. The install icon on the desktop
2. The quickpet icon on the desktop
3. A wide variety of PET packages that can be found by using http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html and a meaningful searchphrase.
4. The occasional DEB package you might come across on the internet. Normally DEBs can be found by using the installer icon. If you try to install a lone deb package, the installer will tell you what dependencies you need.

RPMs are not a good idea for an Ubuntu connected Puppy, as 5.2.

You might want to build your own from here http://bkhome.org/woof/index.html using Red Hat repositories as your base.
