Evening, all.
Some information for y'all. One of our Puppy forum members over at murga-linux.com has built, specifically for Puppy, an extremely lightweight remote desktop control app, à la Teamviewer.
It's being included, as standard, in the upcoming FatDog 800, and operates through a VPN, via the world-wide network of 'supernodes'.
It makes use of five items:-
a )
ssvncviewer
b )
x11vnc
c )
n2n-edge (which makes connecting to the network of supernodes possible); this particular item, in its current format, is Puppy-specific, and has been rebuilt by
jamesbond, one of the FatDog developers
d )
ncat - part of the 'nmap' package, and
e )
pv. (These latter two make possible file-transfer, etc.)
I've been helping to test this with one of its developers in South-Western Australia, and the lack of 'lag', despite being some 11,000 miles apart, is really quite impressive. It uses the peer-to-peer model, unlike TeamViewer, which uses the cloud server/client model.....so most of the work is done locally on the user's machines.
TeamViewer now wants to make use of Qt5 for the GUI, which, in its full install, is considerably larger than Puppy itself. The Back Seat Driver package, which makes use of good old GTK2, is some 250 kb in size, and makes use of around 2½ MB of dependencies, all of which are available from the Puppy Package Manager (with the exception of n2n-edge, which needs compiling from source, as it's kernel-specific). But it's a doddle to compile, and takes around 60 seconds once the devx package is loaded.
Compile and script instructions are in fact available in this month's Newsletter:-

As soon as FatDog 800 is fully released, I shall be free to release Puppy packages for this. I don't want to steal
jamesbond &
Kirk's 'thunder'!
Watch this space.....
Mike.
