If you are talking about hard drive spindown, i would recomed it if you are running on battery power. Otherwise HDD spindown may slow down your operations.

it depends.

If you're running a system with only one HDD, this disk will constantly be accessed, so setting a timed spindown is pretty useless.
But if your system has more than one HDD, a timed spindown may be very clever.
Suppose you have the /home directories on a separate drive that you only access occasionally, or you're running your system with a USB HDD connected most of the time, then an automatic timed spindown may be a pretty clever idea.

As I said, it depends.

I have one internal drive and one external drive (NTFS) that is only used for backing up files and disk images.

So would an automatic timed spindown be useful for the external drive ?
