Well alot of people start heading in the way of graphical stuff, either a gui or modeling...

Search on things like C++ guis QT wxWidgets GTK openGL SDL NeHe

Personally I dabble a little with both, but my ADD and drinking keeps me from completing many projects.. So I spend a good bit of time at topcoder (free registration!) ... very cool site, and it will keep you busy for quite some time but in short bursts...

Study by doing ... practise.
Pick a project and get crack- er - going.

If you can figure out how to get more xml tiles into jaako peltonens Falcon's Eye - you'll be a hero? Or work out an mplayer source patch that will let it be compiled with gcc4.0+ (unless that's been fixed already?)

These two shouldn't be too hard to code, just time consuming and requiring understanding.
