error while loading shared library


Dear gurus,
I received this error message on a shared module called
libvortex.so.0 (error while loading shared library)
The file I have put into my project's current directory
What happened?

I tried make install + export PATH, but to no avail

What are the differences between libvortex.a and libvortex.la? I meant the extensions for instance...
