Rust doesn't have anything to do with Java. It's more like the brainchild of C++ and ML.

I think it's quite impressive for a new language. I probably won't get to use it to build a new thing in anytime soon, but it's certainly on 'the list'. "The Rust Book" is an excellent introduction to the language.
Rust is probably harder to use if you're used to C or Python, or at least it was for me. Instead of doing something weird at run time when you pick the wrong type, the compiler will instead give you an error until you fix it, a lot like using -Werror but definitely more strict.
