Quick Facts:
Mandrake 9.1 installed (no updates/modifications other than installation of latest NVIDIA drivers)
AthlonXP 2100 processor w/ MSI K7t266pro2 Mboard
OnBoard Sound chip via8233
Problem: Sound works when KDE plays its startup sound and when using the XMMS MP3 player under KDE.
But, the sound does NOT work properly under other window managers and when using other programs under KDE such as Chromium, Tux Racer, etc. It makes a garbled mess of noise that screeches and sounds horrible.
Question:
1. WHY??
2. I am thinking about purchasing a Soundblaster 512 or Audigy, has anyone had problems setting up those cards?
Could be that artsd is not working with some apps. Try using ksysguard to kill artsd. Then try the app that is not working. I disable artsd from starting by default, as it works very well with kde apps, but not well with audacity, and a few other sound apps.

OK, I was installing the latest ALSA drivers and I did the configure, make, make install, and snddevices commands.
They seemed to work fine except during make it took a very long time, almost 45 minutes or so and was flashing alot of warnings that I could not read since it was flying by so fast.
I thought it was fine since make install and snddevices worked.
When I did modprobe for the modules I got an error message regarding unresolved characters.
What can I do to not get the error messages and get a good install?
