Hi folks,
I'm trying not to sound ignorant, but unfortunately I am hopelessly baffled at this point. I've used a modest amount of search strings on this fab forum, but I'm not getting the right kind of hits. This is due in part to the bizarre nature of my problems no doubt.
First off my system stats... I'm running Mandrake 10 on a Dell Optiplex GX270 with onboard everything. (I believe it's the Intel 845 chipset). My problems seem to be intermittent. I've tried to reproduce the errors on demand, but I have yet to be successful.
Problem #1
Occasionally, my CDROM drives (one burner, one reader) will not open when I push the eject button, as if they are hung up, or busy even though they are empty. It's not always both drives either, it can be one or the other. I usually notice the problem when I try to start K3B (burning software) and it hangs on the scanning for devices phase. If I reboot, then everything will work again. I'm sorry everything is so ambiguous, but I don't know where to even begin to look at this problem.
Problem #2
This isn't so much a problem but an annoyance. Intermittently my soundcard (onboard) will make hissing noises on the speakers as if the sound file was not decoded properly. I do not notice any corresponding 'system events' and I'm not currently running any multimedia applications at the time. Usually it is just Firefox, Thunderbird and a Konsole that are open.
Any ideas or troubleshooting pointers would be greatly appreciated. If any additional information is required I will attempt to get it in an expedient manner.
Thanks in advance.
