Why do sound volumes have to be reset manually on every boot?

I'm using Mandrake 10 and love it! However, after every boot I have to go into AlsaMixer and turn my sound volumes up again. Why don't they stay as I set t

Once you've configured the ALSA sound controls, using alsamixer, to the desired settings, you need to do an:

alsactl store

to save the settings.

Then, somewhere in your startup files, there should be a command that runs:

alsactl restore

...to restore those settings on boot.

At least, this is the way it's done in Slackware; using an rc.alsa script that runs on boot.

Open a terminal, set your mixer by issuing as a normal user
$ alsamixer
then login as root, and issue
# alsactl store
and this should save your settings.

Thanks. I first had to install alsa-utils package and then in a terminal do /usr/sbin/alsactl store.

This Mandrake-10.0 Official is the first one I've tried, and it must
be different from your Community version. I didn't need to do
anything different than what I posted.

I'm using Mandrake 10 Official. Where'd you get that I was using Community version? Anyhow, maybe it's the kernel that is different. I use 2.6.3-15mdk-i686-up-4GB.

Oh, yeah. I was using Community, but upgraded awhile back to Official. It's probably because I removed alsa-utils. I've removed and installed a bunch of apps since installing Mandrake. Anyhow, thanks for the help, guys!
