What Ascii Editors do you use?

Pretty much just curious. I just put Mandrake 10.0 On a Thinkpad I got given. seems to run pretty smoothly. I have a lot of php code to write, curious what everyone out there in linux land uses to write there code. Let me hear your suggestions.

I use vim :-)
I like how it works and I have a cool theme for it.
If you decide to try it, let me know and I'll send you the color scheme I use.

I'm guessing that Mandrake 10 (like 9 which I have on my server) has it already installed. You can verify this by typing:

vim foo.txt

and opening a new file called foo.txt. As for the out-of-the-box version, it's not always the prettiest as darthtux has elluded. Get ready to configure to your liking and check out the website for vim - http://www.vim.org/

This is one I adapted. I uploaded it to
http://www.starnetok.net/~jallen/jmanxome.vim

If you don't have it make the directories to put it in
mkdir -p ~/.vim/colors

and in ~/.vimrc add this line
colorscheme jmanxome

yeah i just installed it. I went to a konsole and typed in vim foo.txt. It looked a lot like the old vi. Am I launching it wrong? Isn't it suppose to be gui'd up?

Jed never gets any love

wh33t: a word of warning, the default settings for many of the editors people will mention to you are NOT created with the standard keyboard in mind. They do take some work to configure to your liking, but once your there you will love it

No GUI... Vim is vi... Well, built in this century

Here's my ~/.vimrc

http://www.starnetok.net/~jallen/vimrc

wh33t, what do you mean by "gui'd up"? Are you refering to gvim?

Well I installed VIM from the Mandrake RPM Drake and this is what it says, and I quote

"VIM (stands for Vi IMproved) - greatly improved (over original UNIX vi) text editor with GUI, syntax highlighting, visual mode and many more new features you won't find in the original vi"

I thought it was gonna end up looking like Quanta or something.

Try gvim and if that isn't gui'ed up enough then I suggest that you use jEdit.

If, like me, you prefer GUI apps, rather than console apps, (or even GUI conversions of console apps) because you don't want to have to memorize a whole bunch of keyboard actions for every app that you use, then stick with Quanta.
