user mountable external HD
Googled and searched but ....
Using diskdrake to format an IDE external drive (using IDE to USB convertor) for backups, etc. After setting fs as ext 4 and formatting I use additional options to allow ordinary users to mount.
OK, so mount drive as ordinary user and mounts ok ( shows up in device notifier, but when I go to transfer data, there is permissions error as diskdrake has formatted partition owned by root
I know I can create and then chown/chmod directories but do I have to do that on each and every different laptop and desktop that I use this external HD on? I thought I should set user ID as 500 since many distros do use this but then others don't. So what's the best way to set up owner and permissions on this portable ext HD so any PC and user can access it?
This is non-critical data.
Thanks
