USB Hotplugging Howto?

I have a Seagate external USB drive that works fine under Mandrake 10.0 with kernel 2.6.7. However, I have to reboot everytime I want to connect it. I have searched all over for howtos on hotplugging the drive but they are all for 2.4.x kernels. I don't want to have to reboot every time I want to use this drive; how can I do that?

Hi.

USB hot-plugging should Just Work for hard drives.
Are you unmounting before you remove the drive?

Oh, I didn't think of that. I will try unmounting the drive before removing is and see if that works...

Nope, I get:

[root@localhost mooreted]# umount /dev/sda1
umount: /mnt/USB: device is busy
umount: /mnt/USB: device is busy

I'll start searching for that problem. It's usually because you are in the directory you have the drive mounted to, but not in this case.

Try doing 'lsof /mnt/USB' (as root) to see what programs are using the drive.

Okay, it was some process (2607). It unmounted. Now lets see if I can remove it and plug it back in and mount it...

Yep, that worked, thanks!
