urpmi and dependency installers

Does anybody know a site that explains how this works and how to use it?

Does it only work with RMP's? What about tar balls? How do I use it? Someone mentioned earlier another proggy that does this. I use mandrake 9.1 (soon 9.2). Are these installed by default?

Total noob on this.

That wiki is a fine resource, not just urpmi. It is Mandrake specific and is best on mdk.rpm files. It does not work on tar balls.

It really is dead easy if it is set up correctly (and there are several threads in LinuxQuestions dealing with this). Just enter:

#urpmi.install appname

and go for a coffee.

Weelll - it usually works )

URPMI works great, and for tarballs you should install checkinstall.

Just enter:

Code:
urpmi checkinstall
...at a root terminal and watch it work.
