Please don't yell at us (all caps is yelling).
Log in as root and configure urpmi via the command line, then upgrade your system using that.
I don't know what command line editors Mandrake uses, but Midnight Commander has a nice, easy to use filemanager and editor built in.
urpmi nano may install an easy to use text editor.

You didn't install the developmental packages? As root, command:
urpmi gcc
