I never thought I would lower myself to asking this sort of question because it seems so easy, but I seriously did 50+ searches looking for the right or wrong answer on how to burn a DVD ISO.
I am trying to burn a DVD ISO on the new Mandrake 10.1 Official.
I have burned DVD's before and CD's as well and it appears to be pretty self explanitory or straight forward.
Now a "DVD ISO" - I know it's an image, but do I burn it on a DVD or a CD? I know there is no way to burn it on a CD because it is over 4 GB's. So it leads me right back to burning it on a DVD. The question is how?
I know I can do it on K3B, but I am using Windows to burn because my DVD burner is on that box.
Questions - Do I actually burn it on a DVD burner or will a CD-R burner do the job as well?
I tried using a software program called "Roxio" and burned it on a DVD, but when I insert the DVD into DVD player and boot, nothing happens at all.
Any suggestions, and sorry to ask such a stupid question.
I tried "google" but google has gotten so bad with advertising you can do a 100 searches and still find a dead-end no matter where you look.
Trying to achieve a simple answer "on how to burn" a Mandrake 10.1 Official DVD ISO using a burning software system made for windows. I used one called Roxio, but when I inserted the newly burned Mandrake ISO DVD nothing happened upon booting.
So I was not sure if it burns an actual DVD or just a larger file that is somewhat like a CD/DVD.
My DVD Burner is set as a "slave" and maybe the BIOS is not reading it when it goes through the booting options.
Also, I was hopeful that there are people on here that run dual boot platforms as I do, who could give me some quick adivice.
I appreciate your reply....just looking for solutions...
it seems u have just burnt the .iso file to the dvd, but roxio hasnt actually burnt an image or extracted image of the iso file to DVD.
i dont know roxio but i suggest using nero burning rom as it has an option "burn image". once u click that it asks u for the *.iso file and then it will do all the work.
if u can get this device on a linux box i can also help u.
The version of Roxio I have does not have anywhere on it how to burn a DVD/ISO file. I dragged my Mandrake ISO file to it and apparenlty it saved as a "copy"/data file. What a piece of you know what!
I do not understand why they waste their time making software programs that are so basic, that they are so hard to understand.
It has a place to make a CD/ISO , but no where in it does it have any such thing that would allow me to create a DVD/ISO.
I don't understand this, oh and neither does Nero 6.0.
I don't have either installed at the moment so I can tell you directly how, but both Nero and Roxio have the ability to burn a DVD image.
An "image" or ISO file is a snapshot of the contents of a DVD.
What you did was to burn the image itself onto the disk as a single large file.
Obviously this does not result in a usable disk.
I find nNeither program is difficult or complex in this respect as I've used both without ever glancing at a menu or help files on first try.
However all programs assume that you have a basic knowledge of CD burning issues such as the different formats, etc.
You may want to read up on this a bit, you don't have to go crazy learning every single thing. A page or two of the intros or primers on CD/DVD burning and formats will do.
The easiest way for me to burn an image is to use DVD Decryter. You still need to have Nero installed, but you don't have to even open it up. All you do is browse for the ISO you want to burn, and it convenrts and writes it. That is what I used to burn my Mandrake 10. DVD Decryter is just a free download away. www.dvddecrypter.com Just make sure that you set it to ISO write!
I guarantee you that I will buy you a PC tomorrow, that neither of the programs that I have just mentioned, allows me me to burn a DVD ISO image. Neither of them does it.
In Roxio (in windows) when I insert the blank DVD rom, the Roxio program automatically comes on and says that it will automatically burn the image for me. i.e. wll detect and make for me. Well I dragged it over there and it created a nice frisbe for me. What a piece of you know what,
I have burned countless CD ISO images, but never a DVD-ISO.
I know k3b has DVD ISO burn-ware and I ended up mnt onto windows files and pulled it into K3b and burned the DVD-ISO successfully.
Now here's the other issue, I installed Mandrake with the DVD-ISO but when that 2nd splash screen goes across just before booting into the desktop, I get a black screen and nothing happens.
When I say a black screen, I do not mean the black screen with a blinking cursor, it just dark, like it's in the rest mode and nothing happens. In other words it never fully boots to desktop. ?????
This is the same video card that worked on my albatron board and now has been placed on a Soyo Mother board, so I am not sure it there is an issue here with that.
The DVD-ISO worked great, but I can't boot to desktop and don't know what else to do....
Sorry, I did not get a chance to check Roxio last night, but I'll try to do that when I get home. I'm sure I just right-clicked on the iso file and selected "burn DVD" from the context menu. But maybe that was KDE and K3B I'm thinking of?
As for the black screen, try setting vga=normal in /etc/lilo.conf and rerun lilo. Then if that works you can try adjusting the setting to something you like.
<edit> Edit /etc/inittab and set initdefault to 3 and you will boot to console screen. Then if the above doesn't help you can run DrakConf and configure your display and adapter card.
"I guarantee you that I will buy you a PC tomorrow, that neither of the programs that I have just mentioned, allows me me to burn a DVD ISO image. Neither of them does it."
Eh, no.
There is no difference between burning a DVD image as opposed to a CD image.
They are basically the same thing to the program.
As long as your writer is recognized and the software understands the writer's disk capacity (you have the right media inserted), then the image will burn just like any other ISO image.

USUALLY this occurs because you have the correct video drivers but the wrong display timings (e.g. the monitor settings are too high).
Do this, let Linux start up and get to the black screen.
Wait about 20 seconds to permit the system to finish starting.
Now hit [CTRL][ALT][F1].
This should put you to a text console if the system did not freeze (which is a great sign!).
Now log in as root.
As root type in
service dm stop
Which will stop the X windows display manager.
Now at the prompt type in
XFDrake
This brings up a text based screen that permits you to select and TEST different video combinations.
Choose different combinations (hint: try a lower monitor, not necessarily resolution... first) and test each one.
If during the test the screen goes black, just wait 12 seconds for the text to return. Make sure you do not press any keys during the test.
Once you get to the rainbow test screen immediately click on the OK as you've found a compatible display mode.
I have tried different combinations in test mode and I have not been successful. When I run a Test I get this error message:
Code:
(EE) Problem parsing the config file
(EE) Error parsing the config file try to change some parameters.
Anytime I try to change the resolution of monitor lets say to 1024X768 8bbps the screen goes grey again and nothing happens, even if I hit the CTRL+Alt-F1 keys.
Any other suggestions?
I have a Samtron 76DF monitor
and a Best Data MX 440 video card with maxium 3D/2D resolution of 2048X1536 @75 HZ witn Nvidia Gforce2.
