I spent DAYS trying to get this working. Eventually I worked it out and I can get the Speedtouch USB working under most distros now.

This is what I did.

1. From a fresh install of Mandrake 9.2 you will need to install the BC and PPP packages as they are not installed by default. (Unless you selected them during installation)

2. Login as root, or SU in a Terminal window.

3. Once you have decompressed the speedtouchconf archive, cd into the directory.

4. type ./speedtouchconf.sh in the terminal Window.

5. Choose 1 for the 330 driver.

6. Choose 0 38 if you live in the UK for the VCI etc.

7. When you put in your username make sure your put the @blahblah.blah at the end of your username.

8. Put in your password.

9. Hope for the best.

If it comes up "You do not seem to have connected" restart and try running the script again, surprisingly I have had to do this up to 5 times before it actually worked!

I take it you have copied the mgmt.o file into the firmware directory and renamed it firmware.o or whatever it's supposed to be named?

If you have already run the built in setup in the Control Centre using the driver that came with Mandrake you will have to re-install or somehow undo what it did as this seems to screw up the speedtouchconf script.

Just out of interest what ISP are you using? (Don't laugh everyone) but I am using AOL (though lack of choice) and any customer who signed up for broadband after the first couple of months of it being available can't authenticate over PPPoA without running the proprietry AOL client software, strange but true.

thats because Thompson took over Alcatel's line of ADSL modems. Initially it's still an alcatel design, but now marketed as Thompson.

Thanks for the link. I had been using the speedbundle on the 2.4 kernel but I just couldn't get it to work on the 2.6 series. But the speedtouchconf package (with a small alteration to the kernel source http://www.mail-archive.com/speedtou.../msg05299.html ) works.

http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/faq/index.html doesn't list Spain but it give VPI 0, VCI 35 for Portugal
If you have the three Mandrake 9.1 CD's go to the Mandrake Control Center and try to set up your internet connection (choose the wizard). I found it installed the drivers and everything for me. It was only when I started doing Linux From Scratch and had to do everything myself that it started getting hard.

Maybe this link can help - it solved my connection problems.
Quote:
The best solution is to use a computer with an internet connection or under
windows in order to go to this FTP server "ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/linux/Mandrake"

and you download in the directory "update" this RPM :

drakxtools-9.2-19.4.92mdk.i586.rpm
drakxtools-newt-9.2-19.4.92mdk.i586.rpm
harddrake-9.2-19.4.92mdk.i586.rpm
harddrake-ui-9.2-19.4.92mdk.i586.rpm

After this copy this file under your linux computer.

Open a X terminal in root user and go to the directory of your download RPM
and enter this command line :

urpmi *.rpm

after this, open Mandrake Control Center, and start the tools "Drakconnect" and
configure your connection with your FAI parameter.
There are even newer versions of the rpms above now avalable which also work of course.
