Setting up a dial up connection in Mandrake 10.0 Official

I'm curious on how the dial-up networking works for someone using Mandrake 10 Official and living in the United States. Whenever I try to connect it says that i'm not connected to the internet and to check my configuration. Also, it makes a different sound (The dialing up comes up on my speakers) when it connects to the ISP. I'm curious if it'd matter what I chose for my provider in the screen before the username, password, and phone # selection, as the United States was not listed.

Hi
I've got the same problem. Last attempt (not yet over), the only thing configured is model connection (not network). PPP makes the connection but unable to get pages.
On the control center when I test the connection I get the same answer as you.
I've a Belkin card but as I said network not configured, and a serial external modem.
However by the log I see it writes to ifcfg-eth0 ("written eth0 interface configuration in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcgf-eth0").
I don't see a ifcfg-ttys0 in this directory
cat ifcgf-eth0 gives:
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
NETMASK= 255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
I wander if this NETSMASK line is not part of the problem
I recall seeing references to similar problems with other Mdk versions and maybe there is someone that has got the key answers for this. I thank for it in advance.

Question We're lots in that boat

Hi,

I have the same problem where my modem dial up internet connection just won't work and I don't really know where is the problem. I also have that problem where my provider is not listed, nor any other from Canada. It's all very confusing for me, so I guess I'll have to go read the manual.

If anyone knows what to do, please tell me. Thanks.

Have you tried using kppp specifically to set up a dial-up connection in Mandrake? - that should be sufficient to connect with - you'd typically need to give the phone number, username & password, modem device name, and chosen connection speed.

Using kppp

Yesterday, I've tried to download kppp on this computer and transfer it by disquette to the patient, but the file became many files with very strange names, as though the file had been corrupted. I gave up after trying to copy them to the computer, where it was at folder 300 and file 11 000 or something when I stopped it. Was I on the right path in order to get kppp, or is there another way?

I also wonder the hardware of this computer. Being a Compaq, I suspect it might not like the modem, since it already rejected the keyboard and we had to change it.

As for your question concerning how it looks on Mandrake 10 Official, I would say that it is basic except that it lists only European providers. Also, I noticed that even if I change the protocol in modify connection (or something--first row, far right) to "the rest of the world", and press apply, it always comes back to "European protocol" when I close and reopen the window. That could be the problem.

Kppp isn't on any of the three Mandrake disks, isn't it? I couldn't find it there. I can't find it on the computer, either.

Hmm...

If you are using a winmodem check this thread out. I had a similiar problem and kppp was what worked. Hope this helps.
