When attempting to install Mandrake 10.1 using the default options (pressing enter) I got a message rather continually and gave up and rebooted, the message was:
Quote:
hda1: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0xff
so I attempting again and went into the options section this time trying "linux noapic" and got the same message.
The next attempt I tried using the alt1 config, and this seemed to be going better until it informed me that "the floppy" didn't have the sil3114A sata_sil and later in the instalation it gave me this message:
Quote:
insmod'ing module sata_nv failed at /usr/bin/perl-install/modules.pm line 302
and as you've probably guessed my SATA drive wasn't recognized during partitioning, so I could not install (this is the drive I am attempting to install Mandrake to)
My other IDE drive was recognized and everything else looked fine, from what I could see at that point.
My mobo is: ASUS k8n4-e deluxe with NVIDIA nForce 4 4xchipset
(oh yeah, the drive is fine I am able to use it on windows)
So my question is how can I get the install to load the drivers for my SATA controller?
any help is welcomed with open arms (I've been googling for hours to no avail and have gotten extremely frustrated and being a linux newbie doesn't help )

the way to go is to get 2005 or 2006 because it will have a newer kernel.
It is all done for you. AT this stage you are better of learning
basics from linux than kernel compiling if you are new to linux
A newer kernel: (do not remove the old one!)
either using urpmi (but that would only be a security update I think,
do not take my word for it)
or downloaded from mirror of kernel.org
then untar
then change link to /usr/src/linux
then make xconfig
then
make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install
then copy 3 files to /boot
make the initrd
add the grub settings for the new kernel (keep the old one)
and get rolling
Plenty of tutorial around, make a backup of .config,
and there are tricks like make oldconfig (?)
One of the thing is that the kernel is patched by mandriva,
so with a stock kernel you may be missing a thing or two,
although I believe it can be made to work without too much problem
Any newer kernel will not have nv drivers, the distro will.
Mine is older, Nforce2 chipset. Gigabyte Ga7N400 Pro2 motherboard.
If you can't install then you won't be able to upgrade the kernel.
I would down load the 2006 mandriva, and run the install from the beginning, it's three cd's worth of software and it's free. Kernel version 2.6.12-12
If you have the same problem with that version of the distro, then I'm not too sure what to do as far as mandriva is concerned.
Here is the output of uname -a and lsmod from my system. I'll highlight the main chipset pieces in red. The other stuff like usb and apm acpi is in there too, but if you get the main bits the rest should take care of itself.

The NV drivers Emmanuel_UK mentions is the 3D graphics driver/module, not the MB chipset. (I think)
correct.
Sorry, jumped one step and assumed you might have a nvidia video card as well as nvidia chipset, and I was trying to say the closed source video driver for the card itself will not be in the kernel.
Off course it is a different issue to that of the sata
