problems with intel 85x graphics card and dell 700m...

I'm attempting to install the official version of 10.1 on my laptop... i've chosen the correct graphics card, monitor (dell laptop 1280x800), and resolutioN (1280x800 24bpp). When I test (I'm trying to find the proper settings using FXdrake right now) the screen is very messed up looking... lines of colours. As well the box that probably says "Does this look Okay" or whatnot, is only a little tiny bit on the screen.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks
Rob

I don't know why, but Dell systems and Intel onboard graphics have some problems with Linux. Try to free more memory for the card in BIOS. Dell sets it to 1MB per default, but that doesn't allow good graphics.

.

my bios does not seem to allow me to upgrade the amount of memory allocated to the video card. right now there is 10 megs allocated, i've checked in windows, and a max of 64 can be given to it... is there a way to change this not in the bios? or is this a bios related problem? this is very annoying.......

It was only BIOS related in my case, but that was on a desktop. Beside that fact that I could only choose between 1 or 8 MB, there was also another BIOS defect that did not 'tell' this setting to the system properly, but Dell released a BIOS update rather soon.

Maybe it helps to update your X-server to a newer version. I remember that there have been a couple of updates on the i810 driver in XFree86. You could also download the latest driver from Intel...good luck!
