A great piece of software you can use is Mplayer or Xine.
You can get it via urpmi.
If you have urpmi correctly configured, of course.
If you don't then go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org there you'll find the way to create/update the urpmi sources.
After that.
go to a console and (as root) type something like urpmi mplayer-gui, urpmi will tell you that in order to install that package it'll install additional packages, and that is exactly what you want, so go ahead and press "Y" <enter>.
After that process you'll have mplayer installed, and then you'll be able to watch .avi, .mpg, etc
same procedure should be used to install Xine.
Good luck!
