Question Problem with installing alsa device on mandriva 2006

sound card : soundblaster 16
i have found a guide to how to enable the sound card with the alsa tools ...
the first steps are like this :-
Make a directory to store the alsa source code in.

cd /usr/src
mkdir alsa
cd alsa
cp /downloads/alsa-* .

Now unzip and install the alsa-driver package

bunzip2 alsa-driver-xxx
tar -xf alsa-driver-xxx
cd alsa-driver-xxx
./configure --with-cards=sb16 --with-sequencer=yes;make;make install
(cant post the URL because it wont let me untill i have 3 posts)
i fail already from the beginning *bloody noob* when i write cp /downloads/alsa-* i get something like nonexisting file , why do i get this and what am i doing wrong ? i would also like to know what this line does so i understand the whole thing better ....
thanks in advance

You should be able to configure your sound card in the Mandriva Control Center. In the menu system, open "System" / "Configuration" / "Configure your Computer". Click "Hardware" at the left. Click "Look at and Configure the Hardware" icon. Your Sound Card should be detected and listed in the left pane. When you highlight it, there should be a configuration bar at the bottom of the right pane.

If that does not solve the issue, check that sound is enabled and not muted in your desktop environment configuration. In KDE this is in the KDE Control Center.

i dont know what to do as mandriva is my first linux OS .... total n00b
