Question Poblem in using installed winmodem in mandrake 10.0

I recently installed Mandrake 10.0 Official in my home PC (P-IV machine with 256 MB RAM and 40 GB HDD and CDROM, Intel chipset, Intel Video card, AC'97 sound card). The is no Windows partion in the HDD. I have a DLink internal 56K dialup HSF winmodem with Conexant/Rockwell chipset. I have downloaded generic HSF modem from conexant site since there was no prebuild package for kernel version 2.6.3-7.mdk which came with the downloded version

The modem driver installed automatically using the kernel source files. I immediately confirured KPPP and the modem responded. I connected to the internet without any problem through the local ISP.

However when I logged in as user, KPPP reported modem busy. I again reconfigured it by hsfconfig. The driver reported that there was driver files installed and if I wanted to reuse it. I gave the option yes and the the modem was again available and connected to internet without any problem.

I have tried different combinations and the result is that if the machine is restarted or a new user logs in the modem requires reconfiguration. Relogging in as same user without restarting the machine keeps the setting and the modem is available.

I think the problem is somewhere in settings or permissiions rather than driver problem.

I have currently two users installed in the machine.

All settings (I think so) are in default settings.

Can someone help please.

Checkout Linuxant. They have custom drivers for Conexant chipsets. www.linuxant.com and go to drivers in the menu at the top.

With my 9.2 install I've noticed recently that often the first time I try Connect in KPPP it says /dev/modem not there, but if I just try again I assume the driver has been loaded and it works fine. A while ago I remember I'd su - and hcfpciconfig again, which also fixed it.
Might just require you setting the driver to be always loaded.

I am using free driver from Linuxant.
The driver when installed is assigning a port /dev/ttySFS0 (or something like that). I am guessing that when the driver is getting installed the /dev/modem symbolic link to ttySFS0 is being saved in the some temp file which is geting erased every time I reboot.

The problem is to find the config file.
