No sound when playing CD in Mandrake 10.1

I am having problems with my sound card playing CD's. It appears to play in KsCD and XMMS, but no sound comes out.

The audio lead is ok. In fact it did work temporarily, I had a session open as SU where I ran 'alsaconf'. I then opened
another session as a user, where it started to play the CD whilst booting up KDE(stange). Then it stopped.

Also if I change hardware from 'Auto' to 'ALSA' in Harddrake2, it states that there will be no input or output. (It did work with a different
CD drive in Slackware first time!).

Details of sound card (Integrated in motherboard).

soundblaster Audio PC164V/Audio PCI128
driver : es1371

/sbin/chkconfig --list sound
1 2 3 4 5 6
N N Y Y Y N

/sbin/chkconfig --list alsa
1 2 3 4 5 6
N N Y Y Y N

Volume set at 64.

Can any one help with suggestions of what I might need to do to resolve this. Thanks

You will need to clear a few points:

- Does your sound work trying to hear mp3 for instance? Is this a audio CD problem or a general sound problem??

- Your Mandriva is 10.1??? That comes with a somewhat old alsa. I had trouble with 10.1 because it's alsa would not recognize my sound card. The solution was installing the newest alsa (1.0.9). Google "Alsa". Try downloading Packages for the newest alsa and install them... If you can't install Alsa (I failled), you may want to try Mandriva 10.2 because it comes with alsa 1.0.8 (this solved my sound problem).

I think that not all the alsa programs were installed. I installed 'sndconfig' (which could not recognise my sound card) and anything else I cound find typing 'urpmq alsa', and changed various setting in different mixers.

I am now able to get it to work! But each time I restart the pc, it is all set to mute and I have to go into 'alsamixer' to fix. I also get a 'FAIL' with 'alsactl' starting on boot up.

I will look into getting more uptodate versions, thanks.
