Dude, you need to give more information. What driver are you using? Is it the generic snd-init8? What does sndrake tell you?

i sorted the sound problem

well this is what you have to do basically to make life easy install xmms along with the relative playback plugins

[root@localhost nick]# lspcidrake -v | fgrep AUDIO
snd-intel8x0 : Intel Corp.|82801EB AC'97 Audio [MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO] (vendor:8086 device:24d5 subv:1462 subd:7430)

this tells you what driver you sound card is using by default all you do is go to mandrake control center in hardware detect look at the current settings of your driver click the run config tool and it will tell you the drivers currently using click on let me pick the i810_aduo compatible driver (of the driver thats closes to yours) then load up xmms hold ctrl+p where it says out put plugin choose perfable esound outplugin click on config check the box that says volume controls OSS mixer and thats it find a mp3 and test it out ... it don't work uncheck the volume control and see what happens

have a nice play

Ok this is what mine says: snd-via82xx : VIA Technologies|VT8233 [AC97 Audio Controller] [MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO] (vendor:1106 device:3059 subv:1462 subd:4720)
BTW: I can't get to install XMMS can I download the Red Hat 9 RPM and run it in Mandrake

silly question maybe but did you turn up the volume? I think Mandrake mutes sound by default. Use aumix to check.

hi Kensai,

Never get MDK running with snd-via82xx ( this is ALSA module )changed to OSS AND EVERYTHING WORKS !! ( module for OSS is via82cxxx_audio ).

I have the same sound system as you have, try ... go to mdk control center>material>sound card>change driver from snd-via82xx to the above...log out / log in and maybe you will have sound for a change.

Ok I never get to configure it so I switched to fedora Core 2 test1 and theres the same problem I have no sound when it asked me to play the test I pressed the button but couldn't hear nothing when I finally got into the system I pumped the volume up :-) but still get non sound. Should I start this thread now on fedora forum or should I stay here???

hi,

Don't need to start another thread, just try to change from via-82xx to via82cxxx_audio.Mandrake is quite easy to start with, just go to draksound and change sound driver ( don't need to do anything else than a click at the right place!!... even windze cannot do it so clearly)

I'm not sure 100% but mdk and fedora are now very similar ( so if you have troubles with one, you will probably have the sames with the other.. )
