I just recently installed Linux Mandrake 9.1 for the first time on my Pentium 600 downstairs, and the install went extremely well (device configuration worked fine, no network problems). Unfortunately, when I try to log in under KDE or GNOME (other interfaces work okay), the interface boots up (I get KDE's flashing wrench splash) and then the cursor switches to 'loading', the CPU runs like mad, and the screen hangs. Any help as to resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
That sounds to me like X-configuration error.. I think that mdk does it's configuration automaticly during the install, so why don't you try to reinstall the OS? And what do you mean with that "the CPU runs like mad"? Is the red LED on your PC's cover flashing, or you have found it via 'top'?
If You have the login screen it not a X-configuration error. During login Kde and Gnome are turning on required services. What is probably hanging you system is the sound deamon. Hit alt-cntl-f1 log into root and type in init 3. Then type startx. This will allows you to have graphics with full privileges. Run the MDk control center and disable each service one at a time starting with sound and then try to log into the user account again. This will help you find which service that freezing you system on login.
Thanks for your help! I hit CTRL+ALT+F1 during the bootprocess and got to the localhost login screen, but unfortunately when I typed 'root' as the login and my root password, it says 'Login Incorrect'. I'm sure I'm using the right root password because I've used 'root' and the root password at the opening login screen without problem. Is there something extra I have to do to log in as root in the way you describe? Thanks!
No. But make shure the cap lite is on/off. Forgetting to check the caps lite has caused me to reload on different occasion.(No more beer drinking when I'am loading a system) ha ha
Okay, thanks. The console is the only place I seem to have trouble logging into root (I can do it at the login screen and in failsafe), but if I don't figure it out soon I'll just reinstall the OS. For what it's worth, I set the security level to 'Higher' when I installed because I intend to use the computer as a webserver and was told that that is the lowest security setting that will allow it. Any relation to that, perhaps?
