I recently installed Mandriva 2007 Discovery x86_64, it awsome no complaints. So since everything was operating so smoothly I decided to upgrade to a new sound card. It is in but no sound. I do not think mycomupter even knows it is there, So I am wonder do I need to configure new card or is it a problem with my motherboard? BTW I have had continous problems with my stero sound from this MBO. I have tried three other flavors of linux with this MBO...i.e. Suse 10.0, Suse 10.1, Madrivia 2006 and most resent Mandriva 2007 which seems tobe the best so far, anyway Can I get some help, please I am still learning linux.
Thanks in advances.
Oh yes on a differnt note. Does anyone know any good books for Linux with lots easy to understand examples and lots of comparasions with windows application. Kind of geared for young readers. This would be about my speed right now. I am self learning and I tend to be learn as I go and self taught type...
Here is what I have.
Mandriva 2007 Discovery x86_64
chaintech vnf 4 ultra mbo w/ nvida nforce4ultra I am using 2.1 sound with on board sound but I have had continous problems with the stero on this motherboard.
Your sound system is AC97 compliant, which means it works in Linux. Mandriva has native drivers. Are you using ALSA or OSS? I used to use OSS exclusively, but in the past 2 years ALSA has performed better for me. What is the name of your new sound card? Also, Did you turn off the on-board sound in the bios?
Thanks allot. It is working smooth. I also used a tip form a related thread. I logged onto treminal and pulled up alsamixer and ajusted the sound from there. thanks again.
Distribution: Mandriva mostly, vector 5.1, tried many.Suse gone from HD because bad Novell/Zinblows agreement

re reading:
mandriva 2007 doc (not installed by default)
so start drakrpm and install it
go to lq bookmark and search for newbie
or admin or rute
I know it is electronic, not a real book, but this
will help while you get hold of a good hardback
If you search LQ there must be some book suggestions
(otherwise see local library, or online bookstores).
It is actually quite hard to recommand a book;
If you open a few you will find a style you like
