so by adding the urpmi source i should be able to get kde-3.3.2 rpms? but when i try that my menus did not appear so what rpms i need to install to get the original mandrake menus?
BTW -- I would be very carefull using THAC's rpm's. I ran into some major headaches with them because he doesn't follow mandrake rpm build policies and I have had some major rpm lib conflicts.

Well, I followed joop's instructions from a previous post in this thread, and issued:
# urpmi.addmedia --update kde "http://rpm.nyvalls.se/10.1/RPMS/kde-3.3.2/" with ../hdlist.cz
worked like a champ! Now what?
I am a newbie to Mandrake. Now that I have completed the above step, is there a simple command to actually update KDE to 3.3.2? I have checked the RPMS, and there is a bewilderingly large number of files involved. Can I get urpmi (or some other tool) to figure out all the inter-package dependencies and install everything in the right order?
I am also guessing that you have to be a run level 3 (command line) so as to not be using KDE at the time you try to update it?
So... can someone post the "recipe" for the steps from the above urpmi.installmedia to getting the complete KDE 3.2 -> KDE 3.3 update completed? ...speak slowly and as if to a small child!

OK, thanks. I tried that, but without success. It asked me several questions about competing versions of various packages (about 6 questions in all, several seemed to be repeats) and then it just "got stuck". CPU usage peg'd at 100%, I could see the odd blip of internet activity (all of this via Xosview), but that was all. I killed it after 1.5 hours of no visible progress. I am running 10.1 CE - could that have anything to do with it? Perhaps you can only upgrade 10.1 Official? Thanks.
Yeah, update to 10.1 Official. set up your urpmi mirrors using Easy Urpmi, and then issue the command: "urpmi --auto-select". That should take care of it.

Thanks guys. What *is* the difference between 10.1 CE and 10.1 Official? Other than the ability to upgrade to KDE 3.3, are there significant differences between the two? Is CE somewhat like the beta version of Official, or is there some other relationship between them? I am running CE, and it is great - I am not sure what Official could offer that would be better (perhaps fix some of the device access issues for removable drives? )
I guess I am starting to wonder whether I really want KDE 3.3 enough to go through a complete OS upgrade as well as a complete desktop upgrade in order to get it. Subjectively, is the the upgrade from CE to Official worth the effort? Thanks!
Community Edition is basically a final "beta" version of the release. Once the last round of bugfixes is in, they release the "Official Edition", which is the final release. CE is no longer actively supported once OE is done.

Thanks - yup, I will definitely install MDK 10.2 when it becomes available, and may go with the Official version then. Until then, I am very happy with 10.1 CE and am taking a different path to KDE 3.3.2.
I went to www.kde.org, and read up on building KDE 3.3.2 from source. KDE provides a clever tool called Konstruct that will do the full build/install for you, installing it "off to the side" in directory ~/kde3.3.2, without impacting anything currently in your system. This lets you build, try it out, and only go further with it if it works to your satisfaction.
So, as I type this, Konstruct is building KDE3.3.2 on my machine. If it all tests out well, I will hook it into the run level 5 start up script and be done. I will report back to this forum how it goes. As I type this, it has been building for over 2 hours on my 3 GHz machine. Obviously a big build!

No need to do them one by one - Konstruct does it all for you. I did it yesterday and it is up and running. Look for my separate post on this. I am posting as a separate thread in order to change the title to one more reflective of what is being discussed.
