mounting hardrive via non-root and using it via non-root

ok so i mount my usb hardrive through a root console, it mounts fine but when i try to use it it sais i dont have access privalages, i look and see only root does, so i login as root and try to change it to anybody can view the files but its sais i cant. any way to fix this, or is there a way to mount without being root and thus allowing whoever monts the drive to have accses? it might be that my drive is ntfs also. any helps would be great, thanks

If you're not using an entry in the fstab, you can change the default permissions of a filesystem when you mount it by passing the uid and umask options. For example, presuming you're mounting a vfat filesystem:

#mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbdrive -o uid=501 umask=777
This would mount the vfat filesystem on sda1 and all the files would be 'owned' by 501 (often used as the first real user on the system) and all file permissions would be set to RWX for all users.

Hope this helps.
