manually switching midi drivers?

I am running mandrake 10.1 official on an IBM thinkpad T22.
I have set-up an external midi device (midiman usb 2X2)
who's blinking light indicates that it is set-up properly and it's firmware is loaded thanks to hotplug (according to how-to),
but apparently I need to manually switch the driver from snd-midi to usb-midi.
the usb-midi seems to be installed, but not used for this device.

any suggestions?

thanks again!
