Mandriva 2009.1: Crackling sound from speakers

Hi there

I have had this problem with MDV 2009, and now with 2009.1; am not sure what the isue is but it may be related to how sound gets rendered in MDV.

Here are my hardware specs: Acer Travelmate 6292; sound card is snd_hda_intel.

The hardware is recognized by MDV and loaded correctly.
On boot the sound crackles and when I play music in Amarok the same happens; flash video in Firefox also has the same problem.

Can someone help me resolve this please?

Kind regards,
S

I will ignore the possibility that there is a hardware issue with either the installed (or on-board) sound card or the attached sound system. I will further assume that sound works correctly in another OS or distribution. You can confirm this by running a Live CD for the distribution of your choice (not Mandriva), or booting to Windows (if it is installed). Check that any connectors to your sound system (if attached externally) are clean and properly connected. Try moving the sound system's volume control. If there is static as the control moves, it is dirty and needs to be cleaned. Depending on weather the sound system is built-in (laptop) or attached externally, you may need to consult a technician unless you are competent to open and clean the device. If you have the equipment available, try attaching a different sound system (externally) and/or a different sound card.

I checked the Mandriva 2009.1 (Spring) Errata and found nothing listed, so this is not a known issue. I also checked Mandriva's Bug reporting WEB site (bugzilla), and the only report dates back to MDV-2008.0. The bug is still reported as NEW, and I do not see a resolution there either. I have not had any trouble with sound here, so I do not have any personal experience with a similar issue. THings you can try are:

1. Check your system logs to see if there is any useful information (errors) there. Open MCC, navigate to System > View and search System Logs.

2. Check that all associated daemons are running (sound, alsa, etc.)

3. Check that the correct kernel module is loaded. In a terminal window (as root) run lsmod

If you are unable to sort the issue out, you will be best served to make a bug report to Mandriva (see bugzilla link above).

HTH,

Thanks ernie for taking the trouble to reply in so much detail.

1. I have checked with other OS (Ubuntu and Vista all work fine)
2. Moving the volume button does not have static
3. Here is my lsmod output

I had the same problem on both desktop and laptop - the crackling sound when anything audio is played (audacious, youtube, vlc, etc).

What I did was simply set to ALSA or OSS then back to PULSEAUDIO, then the sound problem magically went away ! Please try it !

but since that day, I have just 1 minor problem left - Audacious when left playing for a while, it would just go to sleep ! (pause or the volume would just go down to zero). I would have to click on the Audacious volume bar and move it by a hair, and the volume comes back alive from the sleep mode.

Anyone else with this problem ?

my Audacious went to sleep mode once again using the Pulseaudio as the output plugin. For now I'd switched to OSS and lets see if it will stay "on" forever.

How's your crackling sound going ?

I know this thread is a little old, but it was the first one that came up when I was searching for a solution to the crackling/choppy sound problem for mandriva 2009.1. The fix for me was to mute all of the mic inputs (I'm using KDE4 and brought up the KMix window, had it show all of the mic channels and then muted all of them). Worked like a charm.
