Mandriva 2006 - Graphics/Display crazy in KDE

Hey, I upgraded a 2005 LE installation to 2006. The upgrade succeeded and it boots and runs, but once the KDE starts, the graphics are CRAZY--icons are off-color, appear at one spot on the screen, and then move once if the app (like the control center) starts to fade them. I noticed that it changed the display manager to xdm from mdkkdm, so I changed that back, but no luck.

Note that the graphics on the boot sequence (and the KDE boot sequence) are fine--it's once the desktop appears in KDE that it gets nuts. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the monitor resolution. HELP!!

That's likely the issue with the new X server. One thing that probably helps is to set back to 16 bit color mode if you're on 24. Otherwise you have to wait until Mandriva releases a fix. that should happen soon since you're not the only one with this issue.

Maybe it's leftover kde settings from your 2005LE that the new KDE can't cope with? After backing-up your $HOME/.kde you might try wiping .kde and relogging in to see if they're rebuilt properly? (I thought there'd be an /etc/skel/.kde but there isn't on my box so I guess you just wipe it to rebuild it??)

I considered that it was the upgrade that was causing problems, so I did a fresh installation and have the same problem. I then changed the default color depth in xorg.conf as dexter11 suggested and it fixed the icon display problem I originally reported (thanks!). However, when KDE starts, KDesktop throws the following error dialog twice:

The process for the file protocol died unexpectedly.

Any ideas what is causing that? Thanks!

Interesting--I was following some other links about Mandriva 2006 and came across this post:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=373829

I followed the advice in about checking the APIC options in the bootloader and the KDesktop error has gone away.

Had to sign up to put in my $.02:

I had the same problem: icons didn't line up with their text labels, icon colours went all screwy.
I initially thought it was because I had old stuff in ~/.kde, but renaming the folder to .kde.bak didn't help.

I solved it by removing the line,

VideoMem 16384

from /etc/X11/xorg.conf, Device section.
