Question mandriva 2005 breaks itself...

i don't get it. i was simply surfing on a newly installed mandriva 2005 LE system (no new programs added outside of those that came with the install CDs) and then the system kicked me out (it logged off by itself), and when i tried to log back in, it stops functioning at the KDE splash screen. this has happened twice already for me. it's very curious why this happens. being a non-programmer, i wouldn't know. but i certainly don't want to reinstall all over again for it to break itself again during one of my forays into the net.

i'll sure miss the active compilers of the community, though. among all the non-debian distros i've tried, mandrake/mandriva always comes out on top in providing a huge amount of easy-to-install binaries. just finding a cinelerra build for suse 10.0 can be a chore in itself. so far, media editing app binaries for suse are stuck with the 9.3 release.

as well, only in mandriva did i have the easiest time in setting up my winmodem (smartlink chipset). i had to fiddle some more in opensuse and i never got the darn thing to work in ubuntu or any debian-based distro.

ah, well, looks like i'd have to wait for a long period before i get my hands on a mandriva 2006 installer. in my country, i only have access to the downloadable distros and not boxed retail versions. i do wish mandriva releases those ISOs pretty soon. i'm missing mandriva every minute that passes by.

what do you mean by "kicks you out"? Does it switch init levels, or does it just log you out of your account. What sort of screen/errors/messages do you get when this happens?

well, i was net-surfing and then the screen turned black and the next thing that appeared is the log-in screen. it's very weird, actually. and now the system stops booting at the KDE splash screen (at the starting inter*something* processes). no error messages whatsoever, not even the crash dialog of KDE.

This may be completely unrelated but whenever I tried to open a openGL game before installing the nvidia drivers it would do the same thing to me.
