Mandrake 9.1 Install Problems

Hi Everyone,
I am new here and really don't know a lot about Linux. But a friend of mine just bought Mandrake 9.1 for her computer and we are trying to get it installed. But there seems to be some sort of problem. We started the install and it seemed to be going very well. We selected all the packages we thought we needed and it started going then it just froze for like an hour or more so we just got out of it and went back in to try again. Now it won't even get past the first part something about checking the memory. We are very confused and don't know what could be wrong. Would it matter that the computer has an 80 gig harddrive? Because I know someone that said they had trouble installing windows XP on an 80 gig so they had to split the hard drive up. Is that what I need to do and how would we go about doing that. Anyway, Please help if you can feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. Thanks so much.

Hi Tinksnook

There shouldnt be a problem with an 80gb hard drive - how much RAM have you got in the machine and what processor is it?

Well I am really not positive about the Ram or processor, this was a computer that she bought and had a lot of problems with so she sent it off to her nephew who knows a lot about building computers and he updated a lot of things. I know the RAM is at least 256 because that is what he told her to get to run Windows XP on it. But I have no idea about the processor I am not at her house tonight but I can try to find that out tommorow.

since it's 80GB(just trying to compare it to usual computers), it's quite possible that you have 1GB of RAM. if that's the case, as far as i know, the only option is to move some of the RAM to get under 900MB...
there's a thread about it somwhere, so you should read that one
