I just installed Mandrake 10 community and am generally happy with it except that I can't get my modem to work. It's an ancient thing, a CPI Viva 33.6 that is recognized by the bios on boot up, was immediately recognized by my old Red Hat 8.0 config, was recognized by Knoppix, but is completely lost in Mandrake.
I'm just trying to get online with it and there has to be something obvious that I'm missing.
dmesg shows that Linux recognizes the modem. I can get the full text of that message if need be.
have you tried setting the modem up under kppp
go to set up tab
device and query modem
(on my system the modem is on tty0 and not tty/modem)
if this returns a result you're sorted
you just need to enter the account info
also
on mandrake 9.0/9.1/9.2 my external serial modem showed up and was detected during install
on mandrake 10 it has problems detecting the modem and returns with error messages
but the modem works fine anyway using the kppp/setup utility
I'll try again, but I kept findin that kppp didn't find the modem either. It would query the modem and say that it found it, but then when I try to get it to dial it gives me the message in the log window that it'swaiting for OK and I can't hear the modem doin anything. I'll get more info and post it here when I get back on that machine.
If anyone has ideas in the meantime, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
When I usethe Query modem button in KPPP it says that it is looking for the modem, that the modem is ready, then scans ATI through ATI7 and brings up a Modem Query Results box with all of the ATI slots empty. This doesn't sound good to me.
In dmesg I get the following about the modem:
isapnp: Scanning for PPnP cards...
isapnp: Card 'CPI ViVa CommCenter/SP 33.6'
isapnp: 1 Plug & Play Card detected total
pty: 1024 Unix98 ptys configured
Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.0 $ 8 ports, IRQ sharing enabled
ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
