Mandrake 10.1 Official not going graphic

I have a problem with Mandrake 10.1 Official... As soon as I pass the boot sequence, it tries to go to the login screen and stops. The screen goes semi-black but stays lit. It didn't do this with any other distro... I'm not sure why. Should I just switch to a different distribution? If so, any reccomendations on something that is good with hardware detection?

when you loaded mandrake was the video card configured or not i had this problem and found i have to configure the video card during the install not after

It was configured fine. It worked once and then wouldn't work again.

try pressing ctrl-alt-f2 when this black screen shows up
it should take you to a console mode, there you can login and manually shutdown xorg and restart it
to shut it down login as root and do "service dm stop" or just just running "startkde" without shutting it down
to start it just do "startx" and "startkde"
