Makefile syntax - includes?

I'm new. trying to install SiS630 modem driver in Mandrake 9.1 and believe I'm having trouble with path to includes.
Modifying from what worked in 8.2, I have:

XX = /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/build/include

This bombs with cascading erroneous error messages from hell. The '/build' part appears in italics and Properties says that it is an alias for /usr/src/linux....mdk. This didn't seem to happen in 8.2. Can someone help with right sytax? Thanx.
