login from windows

I am new and trying to setup my wonxp machine with mandrake.
managed to find the IP of my linux box from winxp and made a shortcut in windows to it. when i try to open it in xp it asks for a login and password... I have tried a few that I know work when logining in my linux box but it wont let me see..

also I login auto as "dell" on the linux box... unchecked autologin and I only have one choice. I would like to login as "root" as well
tried mandrake control centre which always asks me for the root password then system then user drak
get an error which is ..
cannot lock user.lib, file /etc/ptmp or set/gtmp exist

is there anywy to fix this and login at the start and stay as root?

I need to possibly edit samba.conf but i cannot find it and dont seem to be able to search on this... as u can guess i am a windows user so am a little confused but slowly working through stuff

open a browser in linux, and type in "http://127.0.0.1:10000" in the address bar, if this works you should be able to go to the samba server setup, where you can change passwords and such.

hope this works :-)

Why do you want to log in as root? It is dangerous to say the least. You can accomplish everything you would do as root as your normal user by either going into mcc and entering your root password or by opening a terminal and su to root.

thanks i'll try that.... what is the significance of that address...
my IP is 198.168.0.1 ... does that make any difference.... I dont seem to be able to find the samba.conf file anywhere let alone open it and manually modify it... I need to l;earn a bit more about groups and permissions etc that u can enter in cause I sure didnt follow what that was all about in the samba config wizard
Linux is alot different to windows XP but that good...

127.0.0.1 is the localhost address for your PC. If fact all PCs that are configured for tcp/ip will have that address. Its for running internal networking stuff.

You can use either the 198.xxx.xxx.xxx IP or localhost because both address resolve to your PC.

swat is a web based configuration tool for the smb.conf file and runs on port 10000. Hence the :10000. No port address listed is actually 80 which is what webservers run at.

samba configuration file is usually located in the /etc/samba/ directory. You need to be logged in as root to modify and file in the /etc directory.

For more info and documentation on samba and swat see www.samba.org.
