If you use Konqueror go to Settings >Configure Konqueror > Java & Java Script > Enable Java globally > and Path to Java executable,or Java should be: /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_04(your version)/bin/java.

Are you saying all I have to do is place the "x" in the box to enable it?

I am trying to open a chat session by ATT, go to this website, type help.att.net in your browser and click on the chat with agent tab on lower right hand corner and see it it opens up.

I can't get it to open, like I can with windows 98.

No, "x" in a box won't enable it.
In your file manger (Konqueror or Nautilus), go to /usr and then look for /usr/java.If it is not there I doubt very much if you have java installed properly.
If it is there, expand it to: /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_04(your version)/bin.Copy and paste this path into the box at Java Java Script(my first posting). When you have finished, just add /java to the end of that line.
Java should then be enabled in Konqueror.

To set Java up in Mozilla do this.
su in a terminal and do this: ln -s /usr/java/j2re[version]/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so [Mozilla Installation Directory]/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
