Can you just clear it up a bit; do you mean, "Turn off the computer" option is not available, in the dialog that comes up when you choose "Log Out" through the menu(The one with konqui sleeping on a crescent moon)? If that is the case, it is funny, though now i have this option, when i upgraded(long ago) using thac's rpms this option was unavailable, i think there was a fix for this, i'll see if i can find it.....

Thanks for sharing your experience with this upgrade. Here is what worked for me, and some problems I encountered.

1) Downloaded KDE 3.4.2 RPMs to local folder (214 packages)

2) From the folder which had the KDE RPMs I executed "urpmi --test -v *" and it downloaded an additional 27 dependencies and then confirmed that installation was possible

3) From the folder which had the KDE RPMs I executed "urpmi -v *". The install went fine until it tried to install the kdebase packages (when 67 packages remained to be installed). It was unable to proceed as some KDE files were still being used by the system. To solve this, I logged out of KDE, and used "Crtl+Alt+F1" to enter the non-graphical interface. I then logged in as root entered run level 3 by executing "telinit 3". Run level 3 ensures that the desktop manager is no longer running.

4) From the folder which had the KDE RPMs I executed "urpmi -v *", and the installation continued from where it had stopped earlier.

5) After the install was complete I executed "reboot" and when Mandriva 10.2 re-started I had KDE 3.4.2

If I had to do this upgrade again I would log out of KDE, and do the entire upgrade from run level 3. That way I would be able to install all the files in one go.

Notes:
During the install the follwing warnings appeared:
1) /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc has been changed to /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc.rpmnew
2) /usr/share/config/kdeglobals has been changed to /usr/share/config/kdeglobals.rpmnew

I am not sure what this means, and have not noticed any problems that I can attribute to the above warnings.

Finally here is the one problem that I would like to solve:
Before the upgrade I used to have a "launch new session" button in my K Menu. After this upgrade this button no longer appears, and I cannot figure out how to start a new session. Any ideas?

This is a very important feature for the way I use this computer, so if I cannot solve it in the next few days I may just upgrade to Mandriva 2006 Beta 3 with the hope that it re-appears.

What that means is new configuration files have been created.

It's generally a good idea to look at both the original, and the new .rpmew config to see what new options are in the packages, and then change your regular config file as/if needed.

I have found a solution to this problem on a SuSE mailing list but as Mandriva's file structure does not make use of the /opt directory I am not sure where to find the files referenced in this post:

I upgraded to Mandriva 2006 Beta 3 and still no luck. I finally fixed the problem by going into the Mandriva Control Center --> System --> Display Manager and changed it from KDM to MdkKDM. Now I have the "launch new session" option back in my K Menu.

Before finding this fix, I found another (not so nice) way to start a new session:
1) Crtl+Alt+F1
2) Enter the username/pw
3) Type "startx -- :2"

A new session will start, and as usual you can access your old one via Crtl+Alt+F7 and the new one via Crtl+Alt+F8.

When you logout of this new session you will end up back at the command line where you will have to type "logout" to fully end that user's session.

Talking

KDE 3.4.2 more unstable then 3.3.2 was for me... like... If KDE have been running for a while and i try to use Kmix/kwikdisk or any other KDE app down there it gives me SIGEV... and some other programs seem to crash more often then they did on 3.3.2

I saw a solution at the club sometime ago. Apparently there is a problem with KIconServer, so you have to turn it off. Just rename the file(as root)

/usr/share/services/kded/kiconserver.desktop
as
/usr/share/services/kded/kiconserver.desktop~

This would prevent KIconServer from starting up.

This did stop most crashes for me, but Kaffeine still crashes when i click the 'Open' icon for a second time.

So you could give the above suggestion a try, if it does not work, you can always re-re-name it back to the original name

Well.. After going through fifty diffirent ways to get something done... I figured I better register and get some real answers... At least I hope so.. Nice forum... Looks like a good setup.. Congrats on that!!!

Ok.... So far I've done this..

First I went here and read through the thread..

It looked like it was the easiest to use Urpmi to upgrade so I went here and installed Urpmi ..... All installed fine, I think!

Then I went here and downloaded all the .rpms in the folder to my /home/kde.3.4.2 ........

I then navigated to that folder, opened terminal konsole there...

First it looked like it was all going along just as one would like it to... But when it was done I restarted and No change!!

I went to install those .rpm's manually and it tells me there are all installed.....

So how do I get to the point of using kde 3.4.2 ? Now I'm totally in the dark......................

Hi! welcome to LQ.

You probably (as you say) have got kde 3.4.2 installed, so open up "Configure Your Desktop"(kcontrol), here your kde version would be listed along with other info. I think you mean the splash screen which says KDE 3.3, hasnt changed, you can change that to the default KDE 3.4 splashscreen through kcontrol(Look 'n' Feel -> Splash screen). Another KDE 3.4 specific feature is a huge tooltip over the kicker icons, including kmenu, so just hover over them and you'd see the huge tooltips.

Hey... Thanks for the reply, I appretiate it! Well I did as you said... Had to mess around a bit.. I've done some tweaking to the desktop and the big tooltips I've somehow disabled.. I forget how I did it... Anyway I did a run command ' kcontrol ' and it still says it kde 3.3.2, I have no idea how that works... Any help would be awesome.. Cheers!!

The definitive method to know witch KDE version you are running:

Open a terminal and type: "rpm -qa | grep kde"

It will list dozens of package names.

If you get something like:

"kdemultimedia-kscd-3.4.2-1mdk
kdeartwork-kde-classic-3.4.2-1mdk
libkdepim2-kmail-3.4.2-1mdk
kdebase-nsplugins-3.4.2-1mdk
............"

Then you have KDE 3.4.2
