1. you are root, right?
2. did you check your system to see if fglrx.ko was placed somewhere on your hard-drive anyways? It seems that maybe it extracted the driver correct but tried to load the kernel afterwords?
3. Do you have write permissions to that directory?
Well I went ahead and tried to do the next step (4), although there was no folder in /usr/src/ like you mentioned. The closest thing in there was an ATI folder that contained 2 files, fglrx_panel_sources.tgz and fglrx_sample_source.tgz.
I have a 9600 128mb and I was trying the suggestions in this tutorial, but my system is different. I did the install of the .rpm from the mandriva site. The problem is that when I go to /usr/src/, there is no fglrx-8.x.x All I have there is 2 directories, ATI and RPM. In the ATI directory are the following files:
fglrx_panel_sources.tgz
fglrx_sample_source.tgz
BUT, I do have a /lib/modules/fglrx directory with a number of files and a build_mod directory. In that directory is a make.sh file and when I ran it I got the following:
Code:
[root@localhost build_mod]# sh make.sh
ATI module generator V 2.0
==========================
initializing...
kernel includes at /usr/src/linux/include not found or incomplete
file: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h
[root@localhost build_mod]#
I don't know what this error means but one thing is clear to me after running glxgears - my ATI drivers are NOT loaded like I thought originally. I would much appreciate any help I can get to get them working.
Originally posted by timkarwoski I tried to run the ati-installer.run but about 2 seconds into it it stopped saying:
"X Server: unable to detect"
That's why the OP recommended that you NOT use the autoinstaller. It's a hit and miss thing. It works for some, but not others. If it didn't work, then try the steps that were outlined here in the original post.
First of all , thanks for doing this thread, its been very helpfull, since i have been looking for help intalling these drivers. I just wanted to know , what rpm package i should download, its first time i use linux for real, it was a big challenge installing the internet already, because in ati's site i see the 60 mb .run file, and for bellow , rpm. Wich one should i download to folow those steps
if someone could aswer me i would really apreciate.
like which rpm should i choose, i downloaded and installed the Xorg one, but in /usr/src/ i cant find no fglrx paste or something near it, only ATI and RPM paste.
