Quick Question:

I try to do step 3 like you said, and I get this error:
Code:
[root@192 ATIDriver]# rpm -ivh --force fglrx*.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
   1:fglrx_6_8_0 ########################################### [100%]
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.14.2/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): Operation not permitted
Any ideas as to the cause?

Ideas...

1. you are root, right?
2. did you check your system to see if fglrx.ko was placed somewhere on your hard-drive anyways? It seems that maybe it extracted the driver correct but tried to load the kernel afterwords?
3. Do you have write permissions to that directory?

Yeah I'm root. You can see it in the prompt in the code.

I checked for the file in the location that that error gave, and it does look like its legitimate and writeable, if i read this correctly
Code:
[root@192 tim]# cd /lib/modules/2.6.14.2/kernel/drivers/char/drm/
[root@192 drm]# ls -l
total 320
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 319882 Nov 21 23:51 fglrx.ko
[root@192 drm]#

I think you are good to go...just ignore the error message and go to the next step.

Well I went ahead and tried to do the next step (4), although there was no folder in /usr/src/ like you mentioned. The closest thing in there was an ATI folder that contained 2 files, fglrx_panel_sources.tgz and fglrx_sample_source.tgz.

Just an FYI, I ran the autoinstaller last night (version 8.19.10) on my newly upgraded Mandriva 2006.0 system, and it worked like a charm.

Easiest ATI driver install I've ever done.

I tried to run the ati-installer.run but about 2 seconds into it it stopped saying:

"X Server: unable to detect"

I have a 9600 128mb and I was trying the suggestions in this tutorial, but my system is different. I did the install of the .rpm from the mandriva site. The problem is that when I go to /usr/src/, there is no fglrx-8.x.x All I have there is 2 directories, ATI and RPM. In the ATI directory are the following files:
fglrx_panel_sources.tgz
fglrx_sample_source.tgz

BUT, I do have a /lib/modules/fglrx directory with a number of files and a build_mod directory. In that directory is a make.sh file and when I ran it I got the following:
Code:
[root@localhost build_mod]# sh make.sh
ATI module generator V 2.0
==========================
initializing...
kernel includes at /usr/src/linux/include not found or incomplete
file: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h
[root@localhost build_mod]#
I don't know what this error means but one thing is clear to me after running glxgears - my ATI drivers are NOT loaded like I thought originally. I would much appreciate any help I can get to get them working.

That's why the OP recommended that you NOT use the autoinstaller. It's a hit and miss thing. It works for some, but not others. If it didn't work, then try the steps that were outlined here in the original post.
