how can i get my radeon 9800 to work in 9.2?

hello, today i have installed Mandrake Linux 9.2. IN the summary after the installation, i attempted to confiqure my video card. I have a Radon 9800 Pro 128MB. And I selected all of the Radeon cards (with and without hardware acceleration) and the setup did not pass the test. now when i boot up linux, it is unable to display anything but a DOS like interface. it gives me an error that it cannot bring up the display. how can i just get generic drivers to be installed untill i download the proper ones and install them?

I think you type

xfree86config

or

XFree86config

(Someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Everything is case sensitive at the terminal. You should get a menu screen if you type it correctly. Change your display settings to something basic to get your GUI working again.

Try them all! If you mess up, just go back to xf86config and see what works.

By the way, I have had no success geting my ATI radeon 9700 Pro working in Mandrake 9.2.

I'm using 9.1 and it works fine in 9.1

Sorry for my delay, but I only check the forums once every 2-3 days. Been busy playing Enemy Territory on linux.

To install the ATI Radeon into Mandrake 9.1, do this:

1) download the ATI driver for linux at www.ati.com

2) go to konsole

3) type 'uname -a' in console and remember the version number it gives out

3a) close console

4) go to Mandrake Control Center

5) Software

6) Add RPM

7) manually enter the file name

8) type in 'kernel-source' and choose the correct kernel-source with the version number.

9) click it and tell Mandrake to install it. Pop in the CD's it tells you to.

10) go back to console

11) go to directory where you saved the ATI linux driver

12) type this in console: 'rpm -i --force <filename>.rpm'

13) it'll do all this stuff and give you some output.

14) run ?fxglrconfig? It will tell you what to run in the output

15) run the config, set it up, then test out Tuxracer or something and let us know if it works.

Oh, well that could be a problem.

Assuming you have nothing important on your linux partition, I say reinstall linux and let it format the linux partitions so you can start fresh. Then during the setup GUI, you can choose a different display. Also, make sure you choose a low refresh rate! I remember I gave my monitor an impossible refresh rate and I was unable to load KDE until I brought the refresh rate back down. SO that could be a potential problem.

umm.......... in steps 6-15, im sooo compleatly confused. can you go into a bit more detail? like i click on RPMDrake to install software packages. and then a search thing comes up... nowhere to manually enter the filename. Rember, I have no clue as to what I am doing. If this thing works, I will play ET with you and pwnzorz j00 with my panzerfaust! hehe

Duuuuuude! I'll try to clear up the steps 6-15.

so you go to your Mandrake Control Center (enter root password)

Go to software management

click on "RPM Drake helps you install Software Packages"

In the FIND field box, enter 'kernel-source'

It'll show up a few results called 'kernel-source-2.4.XX.XX-0.XX.MDK'

If you followed me previous steps correctly (uname -a) then click on the correct kernel-source with the matching version number.

click the check box and click INSTALL

then the rest of my instructions should be clear?

Dude, did you double click the RPM file you downloaded from ATI.com? Did I say in my instructions to double click that? no! That's why you get the conflict error. You need to do it in the console with the --force command! read my instrucitons man!

Now you need to go back and do the steps I gave you in the order!! Sorry if I sound like an a-hole, but I'm stressed out about moving apartments in such a short amount of time.
