Look's like there may be a package missing like libdvdcss or something like that. Not entirely sure. BUT, you can get yourself mplayer (www.mplayerhq.hu) which runs much better than either xine or totem.

you need libdvdcss

I was trying for the life of me figure out why DVD's wern't playing then I tried a non macrovision encrypted dvd and it worked fine... did a search to find that was what was needed. I went got an rpm of it and voilia beautiful dvd playback. In 9.2 even mplayer needs it to play dvd'a to let u know if u haven't tried it yet hoping it might work.

Go to google and type libdvdcss and you wil find it np.

On both Mdk9.1 and 9.2, the software I needed to play DVDs was on the Mandrake CDs. I don't remember exactly what, but try seaching on dvd in the software installation Drake bit.

Feel free to try Ogle as your DVD player too (I use it and have had the most luck over other programs).

Yes, you need to install the CSS library to enable the playback of encrypted movies. You can get it at:

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/

The file you want is:

libdvdcss-1.2.8-1.network.i386.rpm

Totem now works great!

I loaded mplayer and still am a loss to understand how to play a dvd with it.

When you click on the top button of mplayer you get a selct file, how do you get it to play a dvd in the drive?

barrys the version on Mandrake is semi crippled

In order to get the copy of mplyer included with mandrake to work you need libdvdcss. If you have it from the website for it and installed it without rpms then that one will ply dvd's because it has the libdvdcss files included in it s code.

Yes, I have Totem working now with the library suggested. Great dvd player.

But still at a loss how to get Mplayer to actually play a dvd. Totem is clear Play DVD, but Mplayer doesn't appear to have a user friendly key to play a dvd, or have I missed something? Do I have to go to the file somewhere for playing dvd?

With mplayer you can either go command line and type mplayer -dvd 1 or if you're using the GUI then you right click on the GUI screen and from the menu go to the DVD submenu and select what you want.

I found the menu by clicking on the mplayer screen, If this is the submenu then I click on play dvd it says cannot open dvd device /dev/dvd. There does not appear to be a dvd in /dev

I have two drives and I am not sure it is looking at the right place. How can I change this as my dvd appears to be at /mnt/cdrom2

It's not the mount point you have to worry about. Your dvd will be at /dev/hdx where x is most probably "c" or "d". So make a symlink fom /dev/<whatever you dvd device happens to be> to /dev/dvd. So, if your dvd is hdc then you'd type (from the dev directory) ln -s hdc dvd.
