Disregard my previous post about the route table. I had lost my connection...

After restoring the connection I ran the route command to see the table. I wanted to be sure I had the value of the router in the default row and I do....



Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.123.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0

Can you ping your router now that the default route is present?

No the result is the same. I lost the connection after I attempted to ping I remember.

All the same, I rebooted the computer and performed all the steps over again and the result is the same. I also determined that I can ping the router from another computer on my local network.

I wonder...What is the difference between the dhclient command managing to get an IP address from the router and the ping? How can one program contact the router when the other can't?

Lyle,

I want to thank you for your help on this issue. I'm afraid I'm going to be bringing this to a close here. I'm going out of town the day after tomorrow and there just isn't time for this.

I'm now having an issue with my trackpad that I can't resolve..I've half heartedly started a thread...

I'd like to get back into this thread. Hopefully I can get this working. I've decided it would be more effort, trouble, and time to install a whole new OS at this point.

To review...

- I see lights lit up on the card when it is plugged into the laptop.
- I enter "/sbin/lsmod" And I see "tulp_cb"is the first module in the list. So it is loaded and working I assume (?)
- I enter "vi /etc/modules.conf" But I don't see any eth0 information there. Just the dial up modem information.
- I go to Control Center -> Information -> PCMCIA and in the frame on the right side I see
Card 0: empty
Card 1: Linksys EtherFast PCMPC 200 v2
(what is the difference between card 0 and card1? Is this related to eth0 and eth1?)
- I enter "/sbin/ifconfig -a" and I see the information on my ethernet eth0 - But I'm not up yet.
- I switch to root and enter "dhclient" and the last line of the output reads..
"bound to 192.168.123.147". So I managed to obtain an IP address (?)
- I attempt to ping my router by the result is "Destination Host Unreachable"

I would dearly love to be able to get this working. I know only little about networking so I'm looking at this as a learning opportunity. If anyone has any thoughts to share I'd be interested.

I think it might be a good idea to install a more up-to-date distribution. It would probably solve your problem along with hundreds of others you might run into because Mandrake 8.1 came out late 2001 and quite a bit of progress has been made since then.

Or, you could keep trying. If you look at http://www.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=26 and scroll down to "EtherFast 10/100 CardBus PC Card" there are some instructions.

I think you're probably right about the time factor. It seems like when I try to install anything in the way of software, there are issues and "missing dependencies". And its just a drag.

Thanks for the link. I can't remeber if I saw that before or not. I ran by a few of the things in the list and notice they were in effect already on my computer. I did notice two things though. The following was missing from my /etc/pcmcia/config file so I added it...

card "Linksys EtherFast 10/100 CardBus PC Card"
manfid 0x0149, 0xc2ab
bind "tulip_cb"

But to no effect. Also I checked the date of the file inside the directory
/lib/modules/2.4.8-26mdk/pcmcia/tulip_cb.o and I saw that it was dated Sept 23 2001 and I think that maybe it is too old (?) But I haven't changed my kernel so there shouldn't be incompatibility there..Maybe its just that the newer PC Cards need newer files.

There's a link on the site there so I'll check it out.

Since this is a Mandrake thread, I'd better watch what I say!

I find Slackware to be really simple once you know what to do. It doesn't have much in the way of GUI configuration tools.

People really like Mandrake too, and I bet it's good. I think you'd have more luck with any more up-to-date distribution.
