Converted to linux; internet doesn't work

I know that I will sound like a newbie throughout this thread, but bear with me. I finally got fed up with windows and switched to mandrake linux 10.1. Installation went fine and whatnot, but now i have a problem with my wireless lan card: NetGear WG511.

I know many people have had this problem, but all the threads I have found on this site hace dealt with people who have experience with linux and have already started installing the card themselves, but are stuck.

Basically what I need is someone to tell me what I need to do to get this card working from the beginning.

Any help would be appreciated.

you may want to check out ndiswrapper to see if they have support for your wireless card. It uses windows drivers to control your card. It worked for my intel2100 (centrino wifi) but since I switched to the native driver. Check out sourceforge.net or google and see if there are any drivers for linux.

well, ndiswrapper does have support for it, but like I said, I really don't know what I'm doing yet, so I don't know how to go about installing it.

I don't think the ndiswrapper install was too hard. It wasn't as complex as the native centrino install. Have you searched the mandrake forums? They might have some people who can help you or an easy to install package available. Other than that, I'm sorry to say, but you just have to read :-\. Just read the installation instructions and ask when you come across something that stumps you

Patbon, download ndiswrapper at http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/. You can unpack it (unzip in WinTerms) by using the command tar -zxvf ndiswrapper-0.12.tar.gz . This will create a directory named ndiswrapper-0.12 with all the source files. In there you will also find a file named INSTALL. You can read the file by using the command kwrite ./INSTALL. Follow the instructions =)

If you have any trouble, post here where you get stuck. (paste the entire error message if any).

Do not "download" ndiswrapper as it's already part of the Mandrake distribution.

To install it merely type

urpmi ndiswrapper at a root console.

Then read the docs. (it's almost TRIVIAL to install!).

You unpack the Windows driver files, then issue TWO commands after you've installed it, and you are fairly done.
