Can't log in as root??

I just recently upgraded to Mandrake 10.0, and I notice that when I log in it doesn't give me the option to type in my user name.

So how do you log in as root?
I find that it is very annoying when I can't do jack outside my /home/user folder

I change my group in User Config and set my primary group as root, but it still doesn't let me do anything.

Can someone give me some advice??
Thanx

If I ever need to do anything as root I usually open the command line and type "su". This logs you in as root. Mandrake does not provide a root login icon because it is generally frowned upon to login as root. It is too easy to mess your system up.

You want to change your group back from root. If you want to do something as root, you can su to root.

Often a program, such as mcc, will request the root password, so you don't need to su to root first.

if you want to have root on your user selection screen, do this..... configure your desktop>system>login manager>user tab, then hit the admin. mode button at the bottom, input your root password and uncheck root as a hidden user....

hope this helps...

I don't know about anyone else, but when I am on gnome in Mandrake 10, I don't have that option (I did on slackware however).

The menu option blind is referring to is in the KDE menu. You can launch that from Gnome however, just open a terminal window and type kcontrol

I know about su - root
but I don't like having to do everything through the command line

It's just annoying that you have to do it that way

This feature was chosen by you when you installed, it was the security level that does it. You can change it in the control centre.

If you really need to have a root session going:

ctrl-alt-f1
login as root
killall mdkkdm (or gdm, whatever you use, 'ps -ef | grep dm' to see)
startx
