If I ever need to do anything as root I usually open the command line and type "su". This logs you in as root. Mandrake does not provide a root login icon because it is generally frowned upon to login as root. It is too easy to mess your system up.
if you want to have root on your user selection screen, do this..... configure your desktop>system>login manager>user tab, then hit the admin. mode button at the bottom, input your root password and uncheck root as a hidden user....

I don't know about anyone else, but when I am on gnome in Mandrake 10, I don't have that option (I did on slackware however).
