Ok,

I just installed XFree86 4.4.0 and now my Linux install refuses to let me into KDE.

When I restart I get to the graphical login screen, but when I try and enter my username and password the screen goes blank and then sends me right back where I started at the login screen. Also, a good chunk of the time I can't even type anything as my keyboard doesn't respond.

Along with this, when I try to run StartX from the console it gives me an error stating:

Fatal Server Error:
Server is already active for display 0

xinit: connection to ":0.0" refused by server



And so on.

If anyone could help I would appreciate it.

Why don't you try entering first to run mode 3? then you can see which processes are running and startX.
