Before you buy Mandrake 9.2

I bought the whole box set. It's worthless!!! You can get a better distro free, and the User guide is worthless as well. I asked for support on a number of problems, but the free trial subscription is worthless as well. Not once, and I mean NOT ONCE, did their support ever contact me. I think they must be a service for French users, and if you're not from France, you're screwed. If you must have it, then pay for shipping, and I'll give you mine. Otherwise, download Knoppix, or Libranet (older distro) for free.

Well, given that it looks like he registered to this forum to complain ("drakesux"???) but doesn't seem to ask for help that conclusion is easy to reach.

drakesux, if you are still having problems, what SPECIFIC do you want help with? It may be useful to do a quick search for your problems, then if you still don't have answers, post new threads with useful titles. I'm tired of reading threads called "help" or "this sux"...

Well, on the otherside of the coin, I brought the the "Powerpack edtion" 9.2 had a huge problem with the modem, I e-mailed Mandrake about the problem and within eight hours I received the answer to my problem and the issue was resolved quickly. I have no problem with their support. Yes, mandrake has a few problems but don't all distro have some problems that need to be overcome. On my system Mandrake 9.2 installed nicely, works well, and is newbie friendly. Mandrake made me Windowless.
Windows nevermore

=O

This guy is stupid....He knows that everybody here (hopefully) loves Mandrake and won't be scared enough to try new things with it. Damn I remember back when I got my first Linux Distro I hated it but when things lightened up I loved using it.

Well, I've bought 2 different versions direct from mandrake - and had no problems with either - the only reason that I haven't bought a 9.2 powerpack is because the idiot's who are running seem to be insisting that I should pay in Euro's - Well, as I'm in the UK and WE DONT use euro's yet - I was hoping to take advantage of the GBP/US$ thing as it would make it nearly £12 (equiv of 20$)cheaper. But when I select UK as location their site will only give me prices in euro's so at the moment, they can stick it!

I don't object to paying, but I don't intend ending up feeling ripped off.

Apart from that, for the most part, I'd recommend their boxed set disc's - especially the power pack's, it normally makes life so much easier, not having to install nvidia drivers etc (not that that's difficult, but.......)

Also, if "drakesux" wants an easy life, but find's mandrake too much, then just download knoppix, then go to the knoppix forums site and follow the instructions to do a hard disc install - it's as easy as mandrake, and lets face it, knoppix hardware detection is second to none!

regards

John

Post to this forum, or at least use the search box if you are having problems! This forum is one of the best places for tech support on the web. Mandrakeusers.org is also helpful. Finally, I've had a great experience with mandrakeexpert.com. They can't answer all posts (for free), but if you get their attention, they'll see you through 'til the end!!!

No, I dont think so salparadise.

If you checked out mandrake store - you'll see that you get the dvd powerpack for 9.2 and definitive guide - it's priced at 79 - that's either dollars or euro's - Chekc out a currency converter (xe.com?) and you'll see that that IS 2 different prices. And I don't see why I have to pay the higher price. Especially, when I don't generally use either currency.

I wouldn't mind, if it just the one price and then yu just convert it to your local 1, but it's not. This is poor sales policy.

regards

John
