Bad signature problems upgrading Mandrake 9.1 kernel
Hello
I have been running Mandrake 9.1 for about 3 months now. There was a memo posted earlyin December on the Mandrake site, suggesting to upgrade the stock kernel which came with the distro kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk to 2.4.21.0.26mdk which was patched to guard against a root exploit. This upgrade seemed to go ok, and I recall using the urpmi tool for this upgrade. Since then I have tried to upgrade my kernel twice since then, first to 2.4.21.0.27 mdk and also to 2.6.0.1mdk. In both cases, the urpmi tool as well as "rpm --checksig kernelwhatever.rpm" reported a "bad signature" and borked the installation. I got these rpms from the Mandrake cooker site, so I would presume that they have not been tampered with.
I noticed that one of the guys in this forum had the same problem with mandrake 9.2, hopefully someone will offer a workaround.
Gary, Hi.. I am running a -2.4.21-0.26mdk kernel on mandrake 9.1. Where can I find a site that tells me now I can upgrade my kernel to a new version. step by step.
thanks
for 2.6 kernel visit kerneltrap.org. lots of info here. *** This will take considerable more time to comprehend *** and may be a real pain until Mandrake gets a good stable 2.6 release
but basically do this for 2.4 kernel..
*****It would be a great idea to have anything of importance BACKED UP on CD or usb stick etc.. before doing any of the following *****
become root
download and install kernel-source-2.4.22-21mdk.i586.rpm (just an example)
cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.22-21mdk
make xconfig
you'll get a GUI interface here... I wouldn't change anything expect maybe the processor optimizations if you want.(I've tried omitting stuff I don't need but Mandrake seems to be dependant on alot of kernel modules whether you use them or not)
*save and exit* option
make dep
make bzImage
make modules **this will take considerable time**
make modules_install
add the following entry (this is a sample entry!) the append section might be different. Use what's in the lilo.conf file as a template to create your own entry.
Thank You Gary,
vmlinuz-2.4.21-0.26mdksecure is my current version of kernel. I went to the Mandrake site and read the advisory. It said there was a 2.4.21.0.28mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm I cant find it anywhere. I was hoping that there was a rpm package to install..
Thanks for your time.
