alsa-utils -subsequent loss of sound after install

At the moment, the sound card is handled by alsa-utils-0.9.08.8rc7:ens1371.

This particular server has been updated only with those packages in the 'update_source' or "secure" listing. The cooker and contrib sources have been updated as far as indexing goes, but no updates applied from them other than webmin, Sendmail, and Apache2.

However, the sound no longer operates. I attempted to update alsa with urpmi in the normal manner. That produces a list of 217 dependencies. Pretty impressive for a cheap sound card, huh?

BUT, the install cannot proceed because the system cannor RETRieve the libalsa-data, libalsa2 and libalsa-docs rpms. They are at the 0.9.6-2 release level and clearly show on the header list. I even ordered another update to be sure.

I note the main untility, alsa-utils, is shown as being at the 0.9.6.-1 level.

Anybody else been through this little odity? Its not critical on this server, but an annoyance when I need the soothing strains of WQXR while I analyze and code .....

Well, I've solved this one for myself.

For the benefit of anyone who has had this problem, I simply went in to /etc/modules.conf and replaced the alias for sound-slot-o from "snd-ens1371" back to "es1371"

I suspect this problem crept in when i updated the kernel from 2.4.21-0.13 (the 9.1 distribution level), to 2.4.21-0.25.

Thanks, George!

Hey, you're welcome, George
